Holly-Fenton game to honor U.S. troops
Wounded Warrior Project to benefit from football game
By David Troppens
His dad was a veteran of Desert Storm.
So when he heard that the Fenton-Holly game would honor veterans this football season, he was excited about the opportunity.
And apparently so are both teams. In conjunction with The Wounded Warrior Project, this season’s football game pitting Holly at Fenton on Sept. 17 will honor U.S. military personnel, sending much of the proceeds earned with various projects to the Wounded Warrior Project. The Wounded Warrior Project’s mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.
Georgakopoulos’ name will look familiar to him. It will be his own, but for this game it will honor his father.
“It’s a special game. I’m happy we can do it for our senior year,” Georgakopoulos said.
“Wearing my dad’s name on the back of my jersey is honorable. Even if it is my last name, it’s for him. It’s an honor to all the soldiers and all of them who are fighting for us. It’s definitely something very special.”
The idea was generated when the Fenton football program wanted to do something to honor the troops.
“They wanted to do something to honor service men and women and we came up with this idea from a fundraising standpoint to help the troops,” Fenton varsity coach Jeff Setzke said.
Holly was asked to join in the night’s cause and embraced the idea immediately.
“I got an e-mail over the summer,” Holly varsity football coach Ryan Culloty said. “I’m happy they let us be a part of something that will really help people out.
“The kids have been really receptive. They are a really good group of kids. They realize what is going on in the world and the kids are really on board with it.”
Other unspecified events are being planned as well. T-shirts will be sold.
“It will be a fun night and we will raise a lot of money for the Wounded Warrior Project,” Setzke said.
“It’s a neat thing the are doing. We hope it only gets bigger and bigger. We haven’t even made it public and it’s already generating a lot of interest.
“We are local rivals so it should create a great gate.”
The varsity contest, as with all of the tri-county Friday night games, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickof

Holly preparing for big season after strong summer sessions

But you can forgive him if he’s already looking forward to getting the pads on Thursday.
After all, he is a lineman.
“I’m excited about the start of football,” Piwowarski said. “I’m ready for pads. I want to wear the pads. That’s when it will be exciting. The coaches expect more out of you and you want to raise it to the next level.”
But for three days, without pads will have to do for the senior starting left guard and the rest of the Michigan prep football world. That’s because when practices officially started for the 2010 prep football season on Monday, teams are required to go three days without pads. When players get three days of practice under their belts, that will change, starting Thursday.
Monday’s first day couldn’t have been under better weather conditions for the Holly Bronchos. They started practice early in the morning, which meant they took advantage of some pretty cool and overcast weather. It made the first day almost perfect.
“It’s going really well,” said junior quarterback and defensive end Ryan Houldsworth. “We have things we have to work out, but all in all, it’s going pretty good for our first two-a-day sessions.
“Today’s perfect for two-a-days. There is no sun and there’s a breeze. It’s perfect.”
Holly hopes to reverse the fortunes of the last three seasons. In that time, the Bronchos have won just seven games. Since 1990, the Bronchos have had just one winning season (2006). The team seems to think that this year’s squad can change those fortunes. First off, the Bronchos have worked hard during the offseason.
“This year our team is a lot stronger,” Piwowarski said. “Last year there was a little bit of separation between the players, but this year we’re a lot stronger and that’s good.
“We had a lot of guys work out in the winter and we did weight training and conditioning all through the summer. We went to football camp at Albion and that was a success. The team really came together and we’ve been working together ever since.”
The Bronchos started last season with five straight losses. However, they were a better team down the stretch, going 2-2, and one of those losses was a tough one-point setback to Oxford.
Holly coach Ryan Culloty is optimistic.
“The best thing you can learn about a team during the first day is how much
you can throw at them,” said Culloty, who was referring to the amount the kids can learn during the session.
“Over the summer we had workouts and those types of things. Now, it’s a question is did it stick or are you back to square one. We’ve had both ends of the spectrum with that. With this group, it seems we are doing a lot more polishing than teaching. That’s a good sign.”
Holly opens its season with a road game at Lapeer East on Aug. 28.

r TODAY
While football started on Monday, the rest of the fall sports teams start today. That list includes volleyball, boys soccer, cross country, girls swimming and diving, sideline cheer, girls golf and boys tennis.
THURSDAY
Football practice began on Monday, but for most players they’ll be wearing pads for the first time on Thursday. That’s because players on every team must have three full days of practice without pads before wearing their shoulder pads and other equipment. This is the next sign that games are around the corner.
AUG. 17
Already, at least one team will participate in its first fall sporting event of the season. The Fenton varsity girls golf team is expected to host Carman-Ainsworth at Tyrone Hills.
r AUG. 19
For those who can’t wait for football season to start, this will be a good day to get your fix. All four tri-county teams will be involved in scrimmages, and three will be at home — Holly, Fenton and Lake Fenton. Linden will be going to Davison.
AUG. 27
Finally, football games start. Fenton hosts Lapeer West, while Lake Fenton hosts Gabriel Richard. Linden travels to Swartz Creek and Holly travels to Lapeer East.
Congratulations to Team Curl!

Sixteen Holly lifters earned their way to the state meet through the Fenton and Jenison regionals, giving the Bronchos a lineup that put lifters in all but four of the possible weight classes. In the 114 pound class, freshmen Kevin Dumont and Nick Sammut took second and third place. In the 123 pound division, sophomore Tony Reyes and juniors Stevie Gonzales and David Dryer filled out the fourth, fifth, and sixth place slots, while junior Adam Schmeider and sophomore Anthony Konas represented the Bronchos well at 132 with fourth and sixth place finishes, respectively. Holly's top finish of the day came in the 145 pound class, as senior Jake Albritton's combined total of 980 pounds on the squat, bench press, and deadlift earned him a second place medal.
While the Bronchos had an excellent day in the lower weight classes, the team had outstanding performances in the extremely competitive middle classes and upper middle classes as well. Junior Dallas Crandell's deadlift of 500 pounds put him in position to earn a fourth place medal at 165, while senior James Nichols battled his way to third place in the 181 division with a combined total of 1150. In the 194 class, senior Danny Gregory's 1170 pound total gave him a third place finish in a very tough field. Wes Hammond, also a senior, finished a successful day in fifth place in the 207 class with a total of 1110 pounds.
In the JV meet, the Bronchos took fourth place in spite of having many freshmen and sophomores who moved up to the varsity. Alec Miller, Zach Diehl, AJ Lewandowski, Clayton Lindsey, Pat O'Connor, David McNeely, and Aaron Suttles all finished in the top ten in their weight classes.
HOLLY WINS POWERLIFTING REGIONAL!!!
In the 114 pound class, freshmen Kevin Dumont and Nick Sammut took the top two spots, while in the 123 pound division sophomore Tony Reyes and junior David Dryer garnered second and third place medals. Adam Schmeider, a junior, held down third place at 132, while senior Jake Albritton's combined squat, bench press, and deadlift of 955 pounds put him in third place in the 145 pound class. Junior Dallas Crandell's final deadlift of 475 finalized his first place standing in the 165 pound division. At 181, senior James Nichols was carried by his squat of 415 pounds and deadllift of 455 pounds in finishing in second place. Danny Gregory, a senior, won the 194 pound class on his final deadlift of 485 pounds. Finally, senior Wes Hammond qualified for the State Meet in the 207 pound class.
The Broncho JV team came in third place in the junior varsity division, just three points behind first place Henry Ford High School. Alec Miller, AJ Lewandowski, Clayton Lindsay, Pat O'Connor, David McNeely, and Aaron Suttles all qualified for the State Meet in their respective weight classes.
The Bronchos, who tied for fourth place in 2009, hope to have another successful showing at the State Powerlifting Finals in Grand Rapids on March 20th

Football - Josh Houldsworth...Josh (OB/DB) had 16 tackles on defense and racked up 82 rushing yards on 14 carries (average 6 ypc) and 3 rushng TD's. Josh completed 2 of 8 passes for 57 yards and 1 passing TD. Josh had a great game on both sides of the ball as he demonstrated great leadership the entire contest. From his running, throwing, tackling, and blocking on Friday night, Josh was clearly the best player on the field.|
